If you love all things miniature, then Cockington Green Gardens — on the outskirts of Canberra in Nicholls — will have you in rapture! This incredible miniature world, featuring iconic buildings and scenes from across the globe, will have the whole family enthralled. Each famous building, setting, or scene, has been painstakingly re-created, and modelled to scale by skilled craftsmen and women.
Inspired by a family holiday to the UK, owner Mark Sarah’s father set about building Cockington Green Gardens back in the 1970s, while the family lived onsite. The miniature world has remained in the same family ever since.
Visitors start the tour in the original English display section, featuring many buildings and architectural styles that you would find in Britain. There’s also recreations of famous sporting scenes, including the Cockington Green cricket pitch and the famous England V France rugby match. That’s when Australian Michael O’Brien became the first documented streaker and was escorted off the field by policemen Bruce Perry, who used his Bobby’s helmet to shield O’Brien’s naked parts.
The second garden features buildings from around the world, with highlights including Peru’s Machu Picchu, Jordan’s ancient city of Petra, Argentina’s famous Caminito street in Buenos Aires and some of the world’s best-loved castles and embassies. There’s also the Rose Room, featuring an incredible 34-room, Georgian-style doll house.
Don’t leave without taking a ride on the miniature steam train, which takes visitors around the beautiful gardens and stunning displays in this unique attraction.
