Downtown to Thaitown!

A few blocks away from Chinatown in Sydney’s Haymarket is another precinct packed with the specialties of a particular Asian country – Thaitown.

Designated an official precinct by the City of Sydney, the first Thai business kicked off in 1991 – the Pontip Thai Market in Campbell St. Today, Pontip is the centre of Thaitown, which now includes Pitt St, George St and Goulburn St.

Pontip is still the go to spot for Thai groceries and fresh Thai fruit and vegetables. Snap up some holy basil, Thai eggplants and even fresh durian imported directly from Thailand. And if you’re in a rush for dinner, there’s an extensive range of pre-made Thai dinners to go too.

Around the corner in Pitt St is the hole-in-the-wall Huamoom Thai Market, which sells fresh fruit and drinks, Thai street food, and for the adventurous, a range of cooked insects that make the perfect beer snack. You can even sit down and eat their famous noodles if you can find a seat in the cosy dining room.

And for an authentic Thai meal, head to @Bangkok in Capitol Square. The food is true Bangkok-style reflecting dishes from across the country. Try the Massaman Curry, fired barramundi with ginger and green apple and the crispy pork belly with red chilli. And if you’re lucky, you might catch a performance from one of the Thai music artists who play there, including the aptly named Pork Belly Band.

WIN! A $150 voucher to @Bangkok Restaurant OR $100 to Huamoom Thai Market
