Guide to Goulburn

The biggest inland city in NSW, Goulburn is a regional city with so much to explore.

To experience the joys of many of Goulburn’s historic buildings, just grab a map from the local Goulburn Visitor Information Centre, and head out on a self-guided Heritage Tour. There are many building highlights, including the Goulburn Court House, but perhaps there’s none more impressive than the St. Saviour’s Cathedral, an impeccable and well- preserved example of Gothic Revival architecture. Heritage- listed, St Saviour’s is a beautiful church, housing many historical artefacts, within its walls, and boasts some stunning stained- glass windows and other features in the main hall.

Overlooking the town is another of Goulburn’s historical treasures, The Rocky Hill War Memorial and Museum. This award- winning museum was the recent recipient of the 2020 Tripadvisor Travellers Choice Award, ranking it in the top ten per cent of tourist attractions, worldwide! The museum boasts many items of value, thoughtfully and beautifully displayed in both the old, and new, sections of the museum.

For great coffee, swing into one of the most popular cafes in town, K and G’z, where you’ll find not only great coffee, but a selection of fresh, delicious, and largely house-made meals and snacks. If you fancy a picnic, K and G’Z can make hampers to order, which can be enjoyed on the Wollondilly River.

At the end of the Wollondilly River, you’ll find the Marsden Pier and the Goulburn Historic Waterworks Museum. The museum houses the source of Goulburn’s first water supply, the Appleby Bros. Beam Engine pump and Galloway Boilers. This stunning piece or machinery has been beautifully maintained and on certain days of the year including the annual Steampunk Victoriana Fair, you can even witness it in operation.

If you’re looking for somewhere historic to stay in Goulburn, The Abbey Motel has all the charms of a historic building, with all the amenities you’d expect from a quality hotel. The hotel has a total of twenty-seven rooms, all within walking distance of town.
