The Hunter Valley is Australia’s oldest wine region, but there’s so much more to explore in the greater valley, than just world-class wineries. Maitland is a wonderful town to visit, with a trip to the Maitland Gaol an absolute must. Join a tour with an ex-prison officer to really bring the dark tales of the gaol to life. You’ll get to explore the entire former maximum-security gaol, from the prison cells, to the shower block and the kitchen. As well as guided tours, there are self-guided tours available.
Maitland isn’t well known for its foodie scene, but leading the charge on the culinary scene is Coquun. Named after the original, indigenous name for the Hunter River, Coquun is owned and run by born-and-bred local, Daniel O’Leary and native flavours abound throughout its tantalising menu.
