There are two words that sum up Japanese arts and crafts – beautiful and tasteful. And we’ve found a couple of classes across Sydney where you can make something beautiful and tasteful of your own.
First, the culinary arts. Head to Culinary Studio Dekura to learn the finer points of the finest Japanese food with master chef Hideo Dekura. Hideo has written stacks of cookbooks and teaches classes on foods like tempura, sushi and ramen.
Ramen making is full of surprises, and let me warn you – make sure you wear clean socks on the day. Once you’ve made the noodles, choose your toppings and add the beautiful, rich tonkotsu stock. Then all that’s left, is to enjoy them!
Then head into town to Kintsugi Australia, to learn the traditional method of repairing ceramics, and adding a bit of bling at the same time. Kintsugi master Jun Morooka will take you through the process step by step – from filing the pieces, gluing the pieces, adding the putty and adding the gold powder. The result is nothing short of spectacular.
If you need a bit of beautiful and tasteful, or even beautiful and tasty, now you know where to go!
