Sydney is home to some of the country’s best museums and we all love to revisit the big ones. But, there’s also a few smaller gems if you know where to look, and there’s one special treasure hidden on the harbourside.
Nutcote is the historic home of May Gibbs, Australia’s foremost children’s author and illustrator and best known for her iconic story, The Complete Adventures Of Snugglepot And Cuddlepie.
Located in Neutral Bay, this charming cottage is now a house museum, surrounded by magnificent harbour views and delightful gardens which inspired much of May’s work.
Admission to May Gibbs’ Nutcote includes a 30-minute guided tour of the home where visitors can see May’s studio and browse her wonderful art and artifacts. Visitors will also learn that as well as being an accomplished author, May was also a conservationist, a feminist, and Australia’s first female comic-strip artist.
Nutcote is nearly entirely run by volunteers who do everything from the tours, the gift shop, the gardening and even the baking of delicious food in the museum’s lovely little café. It’s the generosity of these passionate people that keep May Gibbs’ spirit well and truly alive.
