The new Sydney Zoo, in western Sydney, is the ultimate in animal encounters and experiences! The city’s first zoo to be built in one hundred years, Sydney Zoo is home to an astonishing four thousand animals, with a mix of native and exotic creatures. Sydney Zoo is divided into five distinct precincts- Australia, Africa, Asia, Primate Boulevard and the Aquarium- and while all the zoo’s animals are born and bred in captivity, many hail from across the globe.
This week, Luke Carroll takes his family to check out Sydney Zoo. Luke meets the latest addition to the zoo, ‘Tino’ the rhino, and enjoys some incredible animal experiences, including the Elephant and Meerkat Encounters where participants get ‘up close and personal’ with these incredible animals. Luke and the family also learn about the lives of the first nations people, who lived in the region upon which the zoo is built, through the Bungarribee Dreamtime Cultural Experience. The experience, led by indigenous keeper Josh, introduces participants to the different tools used by first nations people, from spears to woomeras and participants also get to have their faces painted using traditional ochre.
While Sydney Zoo is home to many large and exotic animals, visitors can also learn more about our native animals in the Australia section, where wallabies roam free, and koalas hang out in the trees.
Sydney Zoo has also recently installed a Ferris Wheel so visitors can view the zoo from a whole new perspective!
