Killalea Beach– or ‘The Farm’ as the locals call it- is just south of Shellharbour and was recently voted one of the best beaches in Australia -and the best in NSW- in Tourism Australia’s Best Australian Beaches list. But there’s so much more to this special place, than just its natural beauty!
Edward Killalea arrived here, from Ireland, in the 1800’s, but the local Wadi Wadi people have been living here, in harmony with nature, for tens of thousands of years. Gumaraa Cultural Tours give visitors the chance to connect with the local indigenous culture and learn about the ancient traditions and practices of the First Nations people that called this stunning region home.
For those keen to try some contemporary bushtucker, celebrity Indigenous chef Mark Olive– aka ‘Black Olive’- has set up The Farm Kiosk, which overlooks The Farm and its perfect sets of rolling waves, on Dharawal Country. Diners can absorb the beautiful bush and beach setting, while they enjoy tasty, cafe-style dishes cooked by Mark, featuring native ingredients. Mark makes fresh muffins and cookies daily, infused with native ingredients such as lemon myrtle and bush mint. He also bakes some uniquely Australian pies, including possum and kangaroo, served with bush tucker relishes and chutneys.
