Woolly Watering Holes

In the early nineteen hundreds, the pubs of Woolloomooloo were full of wharfies, enjoying a cold beer after a hard day’s yakka along the waterfront. Today the wharfies are long gone, but the pubs in ‘the Loo’  have certainly stood the test of time!

And one such pub is The Tilbury Hotel. The Tilbury Hotel is a classic old watering hole, and while its seen a few changes and makeovers, the same heartfelt atmosphere and hospitality remains. Heading up the kitchen is Darrell Felstead who presents a seasonal menu, big on local and sustainable produce, with a strong emphasis on sharing. Stand-out dishes include the Polynesian tuna ceviche, stopped with a taro crisp, the zucchini flowers, and the 12 hour slow-cooked lamb shoulder, drizzled with an Asian chimichurri.

Just across the road, from The Tilbury, is another grand old dame – Woolly Bay Hotel. Serving the public since 1873, the Woolly Bay Hotel has recently undergone a dramatic renovation across all three floors- from the street to the rooftop.

Arturo’s is the new restaurant, serving small and large Mediterranean plates to both the balcony, and the stunning, yet underrated, rooftop. Must-try dishes include the halloumi with anchovies and honeycomb, the kingfish crudo, and their signature lobster rolls. At Arturo’s, the dishes simply sing.
