Ever get a pang for the local pub and Chinese restaurant you loved in the 80s? Well, this Father’s Day why not take Dad time travelling to just such a place – the Bob Hawke Bar and Leisure Centre in Marrickville.
The building is part bar, part restaurant and also the full time home of the Hawke’s Brewing Co, churning out favourites such as the classic Hawkes Lager and the Patio Pale Ale.
And at the Lucky Prawn you’ll be transported with your tastebuds back to a simpler time, with starters like the spring rolls, the numbing chicken wings and the perfectly fried prawn toast.
Main courses are just as nostalgic and just as good. You can’t go past the sweet and sour pork which is just as full-flavoured as you’ve always remembered. The sizzling beef and black bean is slow-cooked before being finished on a sizzling hot plate for a melt-in-the-mouth explosion. And the crab omelet is out of this world.
Finish your meal with a double dose of the 80s. Not only do they have deep fried ice cream, but it’s a deep fried whole Viennetta. If that’s living in the past, we’re happy to stay there. For the evening at least!
