Not all top restaurants are in the inner city and Surry Hills. Chef Joshua Mason, who already has the hatted Hills District fine diner Quoi, has opened his new rooftop restaurant Ciel at Norwest.
Ciel is a casual, fun and family-friendly spot offering sweeping views over the Norwest precinct. It’s a blend of southern French and southern Italian styles that reflect Josh’s family background in Sicily.
The menu leans heavily on the seasonal produce available and new dishes are constantly popping up. We tried the Tuna Crudo with Blood Plums, a tangy, sweet dish where the flavours really sang.
Or you could find classics like steak tartare, lightly grilled over a wood fire, then mixed with egg yolk and served on squares of hash brown.
Mains are spectacular and made for sharing. Try the Bistecca Florentine, cut from a tomahawk grilled on the fire, roast pork with fermented chilli sauce, three-day roast chicken or a delicate Murray Cod with tomato salad.
With Quoi and Ciel, Josh is certainly putting the Hills District on the culinary map.
