To bring Hong Kong alive in Sydney we’ve been dragon boat racing, done tai chi, even visited a Chinese herbalist, And we’ve had fantastic food experiences along the way – we’ve sipped traditional Chinese tea, had a sumptuous seafood lunch and tasted some superb Cantonese dishes.
Our last Hong Kong in Sydney adventure focusses on culture, and since Hong Kong culture is a food culture, we’re starting with Yum Cha at Sky Phoenix in the city. After learning a few tips and tricks in the kitchen, it’s time for brunch with a range of delicious dumplings, and of course steamed vegetables with oyster sauce and a big plate of roasted pork and duck.
Next, where heading to Lion Dance Kids in Hurstville, where Kung Fu master Johnny Leung is teaching us how martial arts moves are used in the traditional Chinese lion dance. The dance is based on a myth of a monster coming down to a village, and the villagers creating a lion to scare the dragon off.
After our Lion Dance lesson, we’re heading to the Ni Hao Bar on top of the Civic Hotel in Sydney, where retro Hong Kong bar culture reigns supreme. Try one of their incredible cocktails – one is even served out of a Chinese teapot. And the food really matched the décor – fun, fresh takes on classic Cantonese dishes. Try the signature Ni Hao Bao, the pork and kim chi potstickers and the prawn toast which puts a spicy, crunchy twist on an old favourite.
Finding Hong Kong experiences in Sydney has been fun, but you can’t beat the real thing. Start planning your next Hong Kong trip soon.
