Double Happy Chinese

Chinese food is one thing you wouldn’t expect from renowned Chef George Calombaris. But that’s exactly what you’ll get at his latest venture Double Happy at the Empire Hotel in Annandale.

George has moved from Melbourne to Sydney and is now culinary director at the Linchpin Group, and Double Happy is the first cab off the rank.

The menu and setting are a fun twist on the classic Chinese restaurant experience we all grew up with in the 1970s and 80s. Starters include prawn toast, this time served on a corn tortilla, spring rolls which are reimagined by the chef daily and classic white cooked chicken. And each meal starts with a bag of prawn crackers.

Mains include lemon chicken, coconut prawns and five spice roast pork belly, served with Double Happy’s special fried rice, and a Chinese pizza, with char siu pork, oyster sauce and straciatella.

The pizza is made in the wood-fired ovens at the Empire’s front bar and dining room, which has also been given a Calombaris make over. Great bar snacks like olives and curried nuts, small plates such as pickled octopus and burrata, as well as those incredible pizzas.

Go for a classic Chinese or a traditional bistro meal, but one thing’s for sure. You’re going to be very pleasantly surprised.
