You don’t have to be big to be beautiful and we’ve found a couple of little restaurants in downtown Dulwich Hill that are churning out huge flavours from a small footprint.
First is the General Eatery and Supply, based in a former butcher shop which was transformed by chefs and owners Dave Moran and Josh McPhee. They’ve taken their top end restaurant training and applied it to the freshest ingredients and some classic café dishes – and the result is incredible.
Try the char-grilled sourdough crumpets, with lavender honey, ricotta and berries, or for a more savoury breakfast or brunch, there’s the signature corn fritters or the divine breakfast tacos are an absolute must.
Lunch might be the General burger with a house-minced patty and house-made sauce, or a plate of the softest gnocchi you’ve ever tried.
Across the road is Rosa Cienfuegos Tamalaria and Mexican Deli, a former florist now serving authentic Mexican food to the masses.
The signature dish here is the tamales – the Oaxaca-style chicken and green sauce tamale in a banana leaf, or the vegetarian poblano and red chipotle tamale in a traditional corn husk.
Try the enchiladas with either chicken or potato and cactus, the jam-packed burrito, or the street tacos, with a whole heap of fantastic fillings to try.
There’s only one big thing you need to supply – your appetite.
