Parramatta is Dharug Country, and its traditional name is ‘burramatta’ which means ‘place of the eel’. It’s also the place of many green spaces!
One of the oldest parks is Parramatta Park at 160 YEARS old. But the Dharug have been living along the banks of the Parramatta River, for over 60,000 years. For those keen to learn more about bush tucker, and the Dharug way of life, just jump on a free cultural tour, run through Parramatta Council. Leanne is a walking bushtucker encyclopaedia, and is the holder of ancient culture and stories, and her Aboriginal Cultural Warami Mittigar Tour is free.
Parramatta has over three hundred parks and reserves, with a green space for everyone. James Ruse Reserve is several parks in one, with a skate park, and the largest outdoor water playground in the city.
But for the ultimate place to cool off, head to the newly-renovated and upgraded Parramatta Aquatic Centre or PAC. PAC is a state-of-the art aquatic centre, and health and wellbeing centre. There’s both outdoor and indoor pools, heated year-round, as well as a kids splash park, gym, creche and cafe.
