Where would you expect to find Sydney’s premier Dutch food shop? Probably not in a dead-end street in a Smithfield industrial estate.
Holland House is one of Sydney’s best kept Euro-secrets. Behind the Amsterdam houses frontage is a shop that is absolutely chock-a-block with Dutch food, sweets, drinks and souvenirs. There are also over 100 different varieties of liquorice, from the double salt to the very sweet.
If you’re after some genuine Dutch furniture, there’s a wide selection at the back of the warehouse, with most being made of solid oak. And if you need something orange to wear to a Dutch football match – shirts, scarves, hats, mascots, anything – it’s all here.
You can also eat at Holland House, in the snug and cosy restaurant. Sample snack bar fare like croquettes, frikandel and bitterballen, or grab a herring by the tail and go for it.
