King It On!

There’s a world full of flavour on King St Newtown. No matter what type of cuisine you want to eat, you’re sure to find it here, and we’re exploring just two – Maltese and Taiwanese.

For Maltese, we’re heading to the Pastizzi Café in North Newtown, not to be confused with the smaller original shop on South King St. Here they make and serve over twenty different flavours of pastizzi, from the traditional spinach and ricotta and curried pea, to the gourmet range of marinated eggplant and beef in a dark ale sauce.

There’s also a wide selection of Maltese and Italian mains, from beef cheeks on mash, to crab and prawn fettucine to the Maltese ravioli – ravjul.

Down the street you’ll find BellyBao, home to an inventive and inspiring menu dedicated to that soft steamed bread popularized in Taiwan.

Try a traditional bao with slow-cooked pork belly or crispy fired soft shelled crab, or tuck into a baoger – a cheeseburger with a bao for a bun. You can also order spicy noodles made from bao dough with a fantastically chewy texture, or baorata, soft burrata cheese in a satay sauce served with pan-fried bao bread.

Great food, great value and absolutely delicious. That’s King St for you.
