It’s been a long cold winter, so maybe it’s time to treat yourself to a long lunch at one of the very best restaurants in the Hunter Valley – The Gates Restaurant at Leogate Estate.
Overlooking the Pokolbin vineyards originally planted by noted wine buff Len Evans, the multi-award winning restaurant is serving up sensational food to match the impeccable quality of the wines produced on the estate.
Start off with steak tartare with a crisp, deep fried egg or grilled octopus with creamed parsnip, fetta and cranberry salad and a chilli coral touille. Spectacular on the plate, and an absolute joy to savour.
For mains, try the Glacier 51 Patagonia Toothfish, one of the world’s most exotic food fish, served with squid ink soba noodles and an umami mushroom broth. The lobster-like texture is beautiful and the flavour is rich and buttery.
And you must try one of the specialties of the house – a one kilo rib eye steak, dried aged between 30 and 60 days. And it’s served with a smoked salad, to really get you salivating for this incredibly tender cut of meat.
And if you love a long lunch in the Hunter Valley, but don’t want to drive yourself home, Leogate Estate has the answer, accommodation on the property. Come for lunch, stay for the weekend.
