Macquarie Lightstation | Vaucluse

You can see it from all over Sydney and it’s a true connection to our colonial past. It’s the Macquarie Lighthouse, and while some lucky people may have been there in the past, the Harbour Trust has now opened the lighthouse for regular monthly tours!

The site has been in continuous use for navigational purposes since the early days of the colony, and before that was significant to the local Birrabirragal people.

The first lighthouse was designed by famed convict architect Francis Greenway. The original was replaced in the 1880s with a new design that closely resembled Greenway’s original.

The Harbour Trust has also just completed a renovation on the last original piece of the original Greenway design – a retaining wall that featured crenelations and culverts facing the Pacific Ocean. The renovations also uncovered the site of an original guard tower that featured on all four corners of the Macquarie Lightstation site.

The tours give you a glimpse into the life of the keepers who maintained the light, and a look at some of the different lights that were used in places around Australia. But the piece de resistance is the climb to the top and the balcony views looking out over Sydney and the Pacific Ocean.

Take the tour, experience the history and be stunned by a magnificent view of Sydney you’ve never seen before.
