It’s won five Helpmann Awards, seven Sydney Theatre Awards, an Awgie and the 2018 David Williamson prize. If there’s one show you simply have to see this year, it’s Muriel’s Wedding the Musical.
After a sell-out premiere season, the musical returns to the Lyric Theatre in Sydney’s Pyrmont, for a strictly limited season. Based on the smash-hit film starring internationally acclaimed Australian actresses Toni Colette and Rachel Griffiths (Rhonda), Muriel’s Wedding the Musical has injected a modern take on this classic Australian story of a young girl — Muriel — who dreams of escaping the monotony and pain of her suburban life in the fictitious town of Porpoise Spit. It’s also the story of Muriel’s friendship with the outrageous Rhonda, who encourages her to dream big, escape the confines of her upbringing and head to the big smoke of Sydney. This is a world-class production which has had critics and audiences alike waxing lyrical about this iconic Australian yarn.
Expect over-the-top sets and costumes, plenty of ABBA songs and an all-singing and dancing cast featuring some stellar performances from the main stars — Natalie Abbott (Muriel) and Stefanie Jones (Rhonda)- as well as a supporting cast including David James (Bill Heslop) and Pippa Grandison (Betty Heslop).
