Gastropubs have been a UK food trend for quite a while – where renowned chefs take over the kitchen in a small local pub, with names like Heston Blumenthal and Tom Kerridge jumping on board.
Now Sydney has it’s very own Gastropub, Winstons at the Nag’s Head in Glebe, and behind the burners is Nelly Robinson from Nel Restaurant. And fittingly he’s created a seven-course set menu which harks back on classic British dishes and flavours, but kicks them up a notch.
Try the crab toast with caviar, based on Nelly’s memory of crab sandwiches at the seaside with his Grandpa, or cheese and onion pasties, his Dad’s favourite, but this time with Pyengana Cheddar and confit leeks. Other dishes include an 18-hour slow cooked steak and chips, and a smashing apple crumble with cinnamon ice cream.
If you want a pub meal in the front bar, there’s some superb English options on there too. Tuck into classic fish and chips or Fleetwood fish pie, or rip open a spice bag of chicken, chips and curry sauce. And on Sunday’s, the roast of the day is something to celebrate.
If you like a warm welcome, a cold pint and lashings of the best of British, head straight to the Nag’s Head.
