Port Macquarie – on the mid north coast of NSW – is known for its gorgeous beaches and laid-back vibe. But it’s the rivers in these parts that produce some of the best oysters in the region.
Rockin’ Oysters – owned and run by James Wood – operates oyster farm tours, which take you out to the actual leases just up river from Dunbogan. James will explain how the oysters are farmed, plus you’ll get to eat plenty of Sydney Rock oysters straight from the water. The real treat of the tour is lunch back at James’s shed. Visitors can pre-order a seafood feast, including oysters prepared several different ways, as well as fresh local lobster, prawns, and baby octopus. Be prepared for a seafood feast that’s as fresh as it gets.
If you prefer your boat rides with a healthy dose of adrenaline, head straight to Port Jet. Port Jet run a range of tours – from dolphin and whale-watching tours to scenic cruises – but my pick is the Ocean Blast Fun Ride. Step aboard the 900 horse power Ocean Blast, and be prepared for a thrilling ride on one of the fastest boats in NSW! Owner and boat skipper, Anthony Heeny, performs giant turns – with intense acceleration – while you sit back and enjoy the ride!
Port Macquarie has a wide range of accommodation, but for modern, beachy style, it’s hard to top the newly refurbished Sails at Port Macquarie by Rydges. Having recently undergone a multi-million-dollar renovation, Sails at Port Macquarie is a shimmering jewel in this seaside town. Located on the river, many of the rooms feature water views or views over the stunning resort pool. There’s also a fantastic in-house restaurant – The Boathouse – serving modern Australian cuisine, so guests needn’t even leave the hotel, except, of course, for a boat ride.
