Sydney Heritage Fleet | Rozelle

If you hanker for the days when sail and steam ruled Sydney Harbour, then you need to visit the Sydney Heritage Fleet.

Currently based in Rozelle, the fleet has about 10 large ships and many smaller craft and is run by a base of dedicated and talented volunteers. Some have vast technical or maritime experience while others bring other experiences and a willingness to learn.

The Sydney Heritage Fleet is currently restoring the Kanangra an old Manly ferry that sat in Blackwattle Bay for many years. Other vessels have been fully restored, like the Lady Hopetoun, a former Government steamship that now operates for charters and other occasions.

The jewel in the crown is the James Craig which is currently based at the National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour. It really is a magnificent vessel, only one of a handful of sailing barques that still take passengers to sea. You can jump aboard on one of their regular sailing days.

With 450 volunteers and 1200 members, the Sydney Heritage Fleet is a real labour of love for those involved.  And they’re always looking for new recruits.
