Opera Australia is kicking off its winter season with the sparkling fan-favourite operetta The Merry Widow.
Directed and choreographed by Graeme Murphy, the show is an all-singing, all-dancing spectacular, featuring Julie Lea Goodwin and Alexander Lewis in the lead roles of Hanna and Danilo.
The story is set in 1920s Paris, where the city is trying to solve its financial woes by getting a newly-rich widow to marry a member of the local gentry. The only problems are that he is stubbornly anti-establishment and she is his former lover.
It’s a real romantic comedy which plays much more like a Broadway musical than a traditional opera. There are gorgeous dance numbers, wonderful songs and music and spoken dialogue in English. It’s a very approachable piece and a great place to start your opera appreciation.
The show is running in the Joan Sutherland Theatre at the Sydney Opera House until August 18. Don’t miss out!
