NAIDOC Week is that special time of year when we celebrate Australia’s rich Indigenous cultures and one of the best places to learn a little more about the oldest civilisation on the planet is right here in the heart of Sydney.
This weekend, Lizzy gets a First Nations tour at Australia’s first museum. The Australian Museum provides custodial care to more than 20,000 Indigenous artefacts including body ornaments, contemporary art and sculptures; many of which are a part of the fascinating Waranara Tour.
Led by a guide from the First Nations team, Lizzy learns, through art, the historical importance of women as the chief fisherpersons of local Sydney waterways; about the knowledge systems and sustainable practices used for countless generations, as well as personal stories about the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
And the Australian Museum isn’t just for school kids and grown-ups. Lizzy also visits Burra, which is an incredible learning and play space designed to introduce toddlers and pre-schoolers to First Nations culture, and to instil in them the importance of caring for country. Translating to ‘eel’ in the local Sydney languages, Burra is full of hands-on experiences and interactive activities that children immerse themselves in as they follow the burra life-cycle – from the Pacific’s Eastern Australian Current, to the shores of Gadigal land in Sydney Harbour.
