What to do on a weekend trip to Newcastle

It may be Australia’s second-oldest city, but Newcastle is one place that’s always on the move. Mike visited “Steel City” for the weekend — to explore what’s new in Newie — starting with a sightseeing tour with CoastXP Boat Tours.  It’s a new way to see Newcastle from the water, and on this cruise, Mike heads out of the harbour with owner and skipper Dominic May. To be within a 100 metres of the massive cargo ships is an experience you’ll never forget, and it seems whenever Mike’s out on the water, the local dolphins know it! They were on our tour, too!

Back on land, Mike checks into the city’s newest hotel, the Holiday Inn Express Newcastle. Check-in is at the bar, so you can get a coffee or a drink with your room key! And we love the “Grab and Go” option at the Breakfast Buffet — pack your brekky in a paper bag with cutlery and coffee, and away you go!

Mike’s next stop is the Newcastle Food and Flower Market at Sandgate – about a 15-minute drive out of town. It’s a collection overflowing with stunning blooms and delicious local produce. Make sure to try the famous Bacon & Egg Roll — made with local bacon in a homemade bun — then arm yourself with armloads of flowers and stock up on the incredible pantry of local produce. You won’t leave empty-handed… guaranteed!
