Do you love heritage buildings and contemporary art? Well, this year’s Biennale of Sydney is for you. It’s a smorgasbord of exceptional contemporary art on show at the White Bay Power Station, which has opened its doors to the public for the first time in 100 years.
This is the 50th anniversary of the Biennale of Sydney, with the first showing being held at the newly opened Sydney Opera House in 1972. Now the 24th edition of the exhibition – Ten Thousand Suns – is once again at Sydney newest cultural venue.
The theme of the Biennale is Ten Thousand Suns, which artistic directors Inti Guerrero and Cosmin Costinaș say encapsulates the multiplicity of culture on the planet. The show features artists from all around the world including India, Guatemala and Indonesia.
There’s also a real focus on indigenous artists and their work, which is beautifully captured by the Aumoana Collective pieces. They are bark cloths from five different South Pacific islands – Fiji, Aotearoa, Hawaii, Tahiti and Tonga that show of the cultural difference and difference in process.
Along with the art works, there are a whole heap of events happening, from artist talks, workshops and a full music program.
The theme of the exhibition is joy and celebration, and that pretty much sums up the audience experience for us.
