Eco-friendly Central Coast

With its beautiful beaches, and lush terrain, the Central Coast is a feast for the eyes…and now, it’s one of the very first eco-certified destinations in Australia! This is a huge achievement for the region which is committed to sustainable, nature- based tourism.

One of the very first eco-certified operators, in the area, is the Central Coast Marine Discovery Centre. Having recently undergone a major refurbishment, including adding eco initiatives such as solar power panels. There’s also new tanks, a herd of delightful seahorse, and a baby Port Jackson shark named Dave! At the centre, touching, holding, and interacting with the displays is encouraged. There’s also a brilliant touch pool, where kids can safely explore their local marine environment.

To tap into the culture, and experiences of the First Nations people of the Central Coast, the Darkinjung, make sure you jump on a tour with Gavi, from Darkinjung Cultural Tours. Gavi is an indigenous elder, with great knowledge about first contact between the First Fleet and the Darkinjung, which led to the latter’s rapid demise. Gavi can also take you to the incredible rock, the Bulgandry Aboriginal Rock Art site, in Brisbane Water National Park. The stone carvings have been well preserved, and are rimmed by an elevated wooden boardwalk. Gavi’s tours end with his bushtucker infused tea and cupcakes!

If you’re looking for an eco-friendly place to stay, with a touch of luxury, Noonaweena, in Kulnura, is a breath-taking retreat, overlooking national park bushland and out to Mount Yenga. Noonaweena is an Aboriginal word, meaning ‘resting place in the bush’, and there’s no better place for some R&R than here! The retreat boasts two swimming pools, four spas, and a range of accommodation options, from singles, couples, families and groups. And for the ultimate eco-experience, they’ve recently added some bell glamping tents, offering the height of luxuries, with minimal footprint.
