After years of planning and more than $800 million in investment, the new Sydney Fish Market has officially opened and it’s so much more than just great fish and chips. This iconic waterfront destination has been reimagined as a vibrant culinary hub, celebrating Australia’s love affair with exceptional seafood.
Among its standout new arrivals is Hamsi Taverna, the latest venture from celebrated chef Somer Sivrioglu. Bringing the spirit of a seaside Turkish eatery to Sydney, Hamsi blends the bold, sun-soaked flavours of the Mediterranean with the freshest seafood in the country – sourced straight from the market below.
At the heart of the kitchen is the chargrill with flames dancing as swordfish, Murray cod and seasonal vegetables cook simply and beautifully. It’s theatre, tradition and technique all in one. The menu celebrates handmade pide topped with white anchovies (hamsi), delicate scallop and kingfish crudo, and vibrant dishes like broad bean fava with kingfish, a tribute to Somer’s mother.
Everything is made in-house and designed to be shared the Turkish way generously, joyfully and often with your hands. From refined plates at the table to Istanbul-inspired street food like Somer’s flavour-packed fish sandwich, every bite showcases seafood at its freshest.
This is Mediterranean magic on Sydney Harbour from Hamsi Taverna and a delicious new chapter for the Sydney Fish Market.
