It’s National Recycling Week, and Channel 7 has partnered with Planet Ark to spread the word far and wide about how to manage your waste better.
According to Planet Ark CEO Rebecca Gilling, the key words are avoid, reduce, reuse and recycle. So avoid products with unnecessary packaging, reduce the amount of waste you generate, reuse any items or give them away to a good home, and, if you can’t, then recycle them and only put something into the red bin as a last resort!
The focus of National Recycling Week this year is food waste. Australian households generate between 2 million and 2.5 million tonnes of food waste every year at a cost of around $2,500.00 per household. That’s as much as a family holiday!
Shop smarter, store food properly, eat leftovers and if you can’t use something, put it in your FOGO bin, or compost it.
For big ticket items, check out what your council offers and make sure everything that can be recycled, is recycled. You can even take a tour behind the scenes at the Randwick Recycling Centre and see how they deal with our waste. You might just pick up a few tips to help you on your way.
