When two mates returned from a surf trip to California, they had a dream- a ‘foodie’ dream to open a restaurant featuring cuisine from southern California. And so, SoCal was born. Located in Neutral Bay, SoCal features a range of dishes with both southern Californian, and Mexican, influences. The venue is bright and colourful, reflecting the style traditions of Mexico, and the atmosphere and vibe is fun, and upbeat. Highlight dishes include Kingfish Tiradio, Ceviche, and a selection of modern and classic Quesadillas. For those that really love their tacos, on this menu, there’s a whopping nine different varieties, from classic fish tacos to the ‘Chip Butty’ featuring shoestring fries, mayo and mole ! Expect great cocktails, as well a huge range of tequilas and mezcals.
Marrickville is Sydney’s home of Vietnemese cuisine, but one restaurant bucks the trend. Pepitos is a restaurant and bar, featuring Peruvian street food, as you would find in the ‘tabernas’ or dive bars in Lima. Owner José Alkon named the restaurant after his father, and it’s also the nickname of his son. The food here is designed to be shared, with stand-out offerings such as the Causa de Camarones- a tasty and morish prawn salad with avocado, potato and olive oil- and the Leche de Tigre, which is a delicious fish ceviche with prawns and fried calamari. Pepitos are also known for their Piscos- a white spirit, from Peru and Chilli, made from grapes. The flavour offerings at Pepitos is a uniquely Peruvian experience, that will have you coming back for more!
