A coastal holiday in winter is something that most of us avoid. But there’s one south coast seaside town in NSW that’s fantastic- all year round!
Less than two hours drive south of Sydney, Shellharbour boasts sparkling beaches and bays, but from May-November, it’s also a prime location for whale watching as they make their annual migration north, to breed in warmer waters. Shellharbour Wild runs regular whale and sea life watching tours, to witness the majesty of hundreds of whales on the move. You’re also guaranteed to see other wildlife, including dolphins and a colony of Fur Seals, just off the marina.
Shellharbour is also home to the brand-spanking new and world-class Shellharbour Marina which has some fantastic new eateries too. The jewel in the marina’s crown is the Waterfront Tavern at Shell Cove. This stylish, open-air establishment has two bars, a fresh seafood cabinet, and a dedicated sushi bar where they prepare sushi and sashimi to order, from the finest seafood.
A must-see in Shellharbour is the HARS Aviation Museum. Based at Shellharbour Regional Airport, it’s an all volunteer group of aviation professionals and enthusiasts dedicating their time to the love of aircraft and history. Tour their collection, explore a commercial jet, and walk the wing of a Boeing 747 aircraft – unavailable anywhere else in NSW! It’s a truly one-of-a-kind experience, not to mention an aviation lover’s dream.
Shellharbour is a place to make memories, and for an unforgettable stay, Ravensthorpe Estate, at Albion Park, ticks all the boxes. Built in the 1800’s, Ravensthorpe Estate has been restored, with modern touches. The entire property sleeps eighteen people, and is very popular for destination weddings. The Manor House sleeps up to ten people, and for couples, there’s The Stables, boasting a private deck and an outdoor bath, and Batemans Cottage which also sleeps two. The grounds are stunning, with an outdoor pool, and sweeping farm and escarpment views.
