A Night at the Opera

Opera Australia has been bringing the best Operas in the world to Australians for more than fifty years, and this weekend we go behind the scenes at The Opera Centre ahead of its upcoming summer season at the Sydney Opera House.

Join Sophie Falkiner as she spends a day in the life of soprano, Julie Lea Goodwin, to learn about the staggering amount of work that has gone into four of the incredible productions of Opera Australia’s 2023 summer season.

First up, Sophie meets rising star, Bronwyn Douglass, who shares her incredible journey from chorus singer to her imminent main-stage debut as Elvira in Mozart’s deliciously dark Don Giovanni.

After a quick soprano-style singing session, Sophie chats to director Matt Barclay about Chorus!, the brand new opera featuring twenty of the best chorus numbers from a selection of the greatest operas in the world.

Sophie then heads to Wardrobe where Coordinator, Cassie Pascoli, talks about the costumes – and the scandalous, real-life backstory! – of the upcoming Australian premiere of Adriana Lecouvreur.

To finish off the day, Sophie heads to the paint dock for a chat with her tour guide, Julie Lea, in the 1930s-style Café booth set about her outrageous character, Musetta, from the fun, all-time classic Bohemian love story, La Bohème.
