A bold new chapter has begun at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, the unveiling of expansive new galleries that transform the way visitors experience Australia’s wartime history.
Designed to be immersive, interactive, and deeply engaging, the redevelopment introduces dynamic new spaces that bring stories of service and sacrifice to life like never before. From the Middle East conflicts to modern peacekeeping missions, the galleries offer powerful, contemporary perspectives alongside unexpected cultural moments, including rare and iconic pop culture artefacts.
At the centre of it all is the legendary “G for George” now proudly housed in a purpose-built gallery. This iconic Lancaster bomber, famed for completing 89 missions over occupied Europe without losing a crew member, stands as a striking symbol of resilience within the Memorial’s reimagined space.
The new Atrium provides a dramatic showcase for large-scale objects like military vehicles and aircrafts, while the striking Oculus entryway creates a memorable and reflective arrival experience for visitors.
Beyond the galleries, the new Charles Bean Research Centre opens up unprecedented access to the Memorial’s vast archives, allowing visitors to explore personal connections through photographs, film, and historical records. For an even deeper dive, exclusive tours take visitors behind the scenes into “The Stacks”, home to countless rare and significant treasures.
Blending cutting-edge design with powerful storytelling, the new Australian War Memorial galleries offer a moving and unforgettable experience for all who visit.
