Whether you’re an old salt or a newbie to the wonders of the sea, there’s something for you at the Australian National Maritime Museum.
For the very young there’s the Mini Mariners program, designed to introduce two-to-five-year-olds to the galleries and possibilities of the Museum collection. There’s lots of playtime, singing, dancing and storytelling, as well as movement and tactile exploration. You might even find yourself role-playing as a fish, a whale or a jellyfish.
For lovers of precious things, there’s the unmissable exhibition Treasures of the Viking Age: The Galloway Hoard, featuring some exquisite pieces jewellery found buried in the churchyard of a Scottish town in 2012. The pieces include crosses, armbands and much more, dating back over a thousand years. And given that some of the pieces have Asian influences, it proves that the Vikings travelled far from their own back yard.
After building up a Viking-sized appetite, the logical place to go is downstairs to the Harbourwatch Café. It’s casual dining in an absolute waterfront position, featuring an all-day breakfast menu, plenty of lovely lunch dishes and a renovated space that matches the beauty of the view.
