Charm, Caves & Crocs

Yeppoon is the Capricorn Coast’s main holiday town – it offers a relaxed village charm and an arty vibe! You can soak up the street art, or soak in the public lagoon pool!

Enjoy the family-friendly activities on the foreshore, including the free Keppel Kraken Waterpark. Bask in the year-round sunshine at one of the many seaside dining spots, or follow the sea breeze down the main street to discover an array of boutiques, and locally made gems. (Our tip: check out Jet James Gallery).

This region has so much to offer. Inland from the coast there’s the rainforest of Byfield and a diverse landscape overflowing with natural beauty. You can even walk through geological wonders like The Capricorn Caves. This incredible eco-tourism attraction is about 40minutes from Yeppoon or Rockhampton.

The above-ground limestone cave system is actually a 390 million year old reef…It’s like walking through a giant fossil!

The Capricorn Caves are accessible to all – there are guided tours that cater for children, and  wheel-chairs, as well as adventure-caving tours which explore the most remote sections of the caves by headlamp.

The most popular is the Cathedral Cave tour.

The tour zig zags through caverns, over bridges and leads to a stunning natural cathedral inside the cave. People can actually get married at the cave cathedral and they host opera performance inside this awe-inspiring space. All of the guides are passionate about sharing stories of the ancient geological history and early explorers, and there is such a peaceful, serene atmosphere about the place. It’s definitely worth a visit.

Nature and wildlife are abundant on the Capricorn Coast, and you can get up close and person to some of the locals at Cooberie Park Wildlife Sanctuary (you can even cuddle a Koala!)

Another must-visit is Koorana Crocodile Farm & Restaurant. The family run business was Queensland’s first commercial crocodile farm and they offer daily educational tours as well as a restaurant that serves up crocodile and other dishes.

The tours give a fascinating insight into these incredible creatures and you’ll learn a fact, or ten, that you never knew about crocodiles. The tours also offer visitors their own up-close encounter…don’t panic… You can hold a baby croc, and trust us, they’re pretty cute when they’re tiny.

There’s plenty more opportunities for a “bite” nearby! Yeppoon’s foodie & farming scene is definitely worth a few days on your itinerary…
