If you’re heading out to the SCG for the cricket this summer, it pays to know where to go to get a good feed nearby. And with these inner-city spots you can’t go wrong.
Opening the order is the Dolphin Hotel on Crown St, pretty much the half way point between Central Station and the SCG. You can enjoy a huge range of beer and naturally fermented wines, but it’s the food that really takes the biscuit.
The best way to start a meal here is with the focaccia and a beautifully creamy burrata. Follow that with some fried calamari and polenta chips or a pristine plate of pasta. And centre stage in the kitchen is a Neapolitan pizza oven working overtime to churn out perfectly charred pizza with classic toppings.
Closer to the ground is the Taphouse on the corner of Flinders and South Dowling Sts, a classic old pub with most of the original features intact. As the name suggests, there are seventeen beer choices on offer, and many are local craft brews.
The food here is classic Chinese with a modern twist, with dishes like prawn wontons, sweet and sour pork, stir fried Chinese greens and the show stopper – wok fried mud crab.
Before or after the cricket, make a meal in the inner-city part of your game day ritual.
