It’s a sad but true fact that Sydney has a problem with plastic and other rubbish in its waterways, including the magnificent Sydney Harbour. Local tour company Sydney By Kayak started by asking their patrons to pick up three pieces of rubbish on each tour. But with the amount of garbage they were bringing back, they realised there was more that could be done.
So owners Laura and Ben started cleanup kayak tours, where paddlers are armed with a bucket, a grabber and a hot cup of coffee to take on the rubbish that washes into Lavender Bay. Tours last about an hour-and-a-half, and get into the tricky places that the other clean-up crews can’t reach – in amongst the rocks, under the wharves and between the boats.
Also down on Lavender Bay is Aussie Water Bike Tours, a brand new way to see Sydney Harbour. Climb aboard one of these big yellow bikes and simply pedal away on the water. It’s safe, it’s stable and it’s heaps of fun.
We joined Laura from Sydney By Kayak and Mark from Aussie Water Bikes for a paddle and a pedal, and we’re keeping Lavender Bay rubbish-free while we do it.
