Ever wondered what the much-loved host of Better Homes and Gardens and Commonwealth Games broadcasts Johanna Griggs gets up to on her weekend? She heads to the lovely lower Hunter Valley town of Wollombi where she’s made her full-time home.
The town is full of history, from the beautiful old buildings to the iconic riverside tavern, to the classic general store which is now offering so much more. You can enjoy a hearty and delicious lunch – and probably the best cheeseburger Joh’s ever had (just quietly) – grab a coffee and a perfect pastry, or even send a letter or get your gas bottle filled.
The Wollombi General Store is now also home to the Artisan Collective, a group of local artists and makers who work, teach and sell their work. You can do a leather-making workshop with Sonya Giesekam, or a hardwood timber block workshop with Polina Karuso. They are two of ten artisans sharing their skills and works in the old barn now known as the Artisan Collective.
Wollombi is just 90 minutes from Sydney, close to Newcastle and at the foot of the Hunter Valley. It’s such a great spot for a weekend escape and there’s so much to explore.
