The town of Stirling in the Adelaide Hills is known for food, wine and divine scenery. And when January comes around, it is one of the key locations for the Tour Down Under cycling race.
The race is the biggest international sporting event in South Australia and, as a UCI event, attracts riders from all over the world and the same teams that contest the Tour De France.
Race director Stuart O’Grady, who also won the inaugural Tour Down Under in 1999, has designed a course to show off the best locations South Australia has to offer – McLaren Vale, the coastline, the Barossa and of course the Adelaide Hills.
And the best place to watch the Tour Down Under from is the balcony of The Stirling Hotel. The riders pass the hotel several times during the stage and the finish line is right out the front.
Anyone can come and watch the event for free, but for fantastic experience, contact De-Tours. They will pick you up from your hotel in town, take you to an amazing location like the Stirling Hotel, and wine and dine you all the way.
Or you can stay at the Stirling Hotel itself in one of it’s five rooms, and make sure you sample the fantastic food on offer and the patisserie and cellars on site.
The Santos Tour Down Under takes place from 16 – 25 January 2026. It is the greatest cycling race in the southern hemisphere and there is so much to do and see around the state, both on off a bike. Don’t just watch the action, be part of it!
