State Library of NSW

Sydney has some beautiful, old buildings and few more charming than the State Library of New South Wales!

The oldest library in the country, founded in 1826, the State Library is a national treasure, and a place to immerse yourself in history and architectural beauty. The library holds an astonishing collection, featuring millions of books, as well as old maps, manuscripts, and other rare items.

As well as the library wings, and smaller rooms, the State Library even has an underground gallery. Currently on show is Shot, an incredible photographic exhibition, featuring four hundred photos sourced from the library’s permanent collections – spanning three decades of Australian life. There’s also a First Nations exhibition – Wadgayawa Nhay Dhadjan Wari – with thirty beautiful belongings, reflecting Indigenous ways of life, and which have been recently returned to country.

The State Library is full of surprises and it even has a hidden, rooftop bar. The Library Bar is a place to enjoy a craft beer, wine or cocktail, and a selection of dishes, and share platters, that celebrate the incredible produce found in NSW. You’ll also experience unique views of Hyde Park, and the city skyline beyond. A day at the library has never been so much fun!
