Sydney Opera House turns 50

From performances by Ella Fitzgerald and Crowded House, to Nelson Mandela’s famous address on the podium steps, the Sydney Opera House has hosted some incredible shows and events. And now the beautiful, grand old dame is turning 50!

To celebrate this auspicious occasion, the Sydney Opera House has curated Birthday Festival – spanning October and November – a jam-packed program with many events free to the public. Highlights include the Open House Weekend, where the public can explore the incredible building that is the Opera House for free! Concerts include Emma Donovan, Chi Udaka, Sibyl by William Kentridge, and Taylor Mac and Matt Ray’s Bark of Millions.

To learn more about the Sydney Opera House, and its rich history, you need to head to another one of Sydney’s heritage buildings – the Museum of Sydney.

The People’s House: Sydney Opera House at 50 is an incredible, interactive and informative exhibition, with representations of one of the world’s most celebrated buildings. There are First Nations weaving and shell artworks, a giant Lego Opera House featuring incredible detail, and even a Sydney Opera House Barbie! This is a trip down memory lane, seen through the eyes of the Sydney Opera House, and an exhibition not to be missed!
