Like every capital city, worldwide, Canberra has a long and illustrious history…but scratch the surface, and you’ll discover a fascinating underbelly, and it involves some seriously impressive women! And compiling, and re-telling, the stories of women’s achievements in the nation’s capital, is a very impressive Canberra local- Sita Sargeant!
Sita is the founder of She Shapes History, a series of walking tours that explore the written, and unwritten histories, of women who helped shape our nation. Sally Stanton joins Sita on her ‘Badass Women of Canberra’ tour, which covers many parts and historical sites in Canberra. On this tour, you’ll hear stories of female spies who worked to protect the nation during WW2, and first nations women who combined forces that led to Australia’s biggest referendum ‘yes’ vote, and ultimately changed the Australian constitution.
Other tours include the ‘Booze, Secrets and Scandal’, which is a historical pub crawl with female stories of trail-blazing and scandal-making, and private tours. With Sita and her team of dedicated guides, you’ll delve into the fascinating lives of many unacknowledged and fabulous women who changed history!
