Discover Hornsby Park: From Quarry to Scenic Parkland.
Once a working quarry, Hornsby Park has been transformed from an industrial site into a spectacular new parkland in Sydney’s north. Just a short distance from Hornsby train station, this former quarry on an extinct volcano is now a place to walk, ride, picnic, explore and take in some pretty spectacular views.
One of the park’s standout features is its 42-metre elevated cantilevered boardwalk, which stretches out over the former quarry and offers sweeping views across the turquoise waters below. It’s a spectacular vantage point and a wonderful place to stop and appreciate just how dramatically this landscape has changed.
There are plenty of ways to enjoy the park at ground level too, with walking and bike trails winding through the park, as well as open lawns, picnic shelters and BBQ facilities. With accessible pathways and plenty of space to explore, it’s a destination that caters to all ages and abilities, whether visitors are looking for an active day out or simply somewhere peaceful to relax.
The park’s industrial past is still an important part of its story. The site was once home to a quarry that produced road base used in major Sydney infrastructure projects, including the Pacific Highway, Mona Vale Road and Sydney Airport’s runways. Today, remnants of that history are woven into the park, offering visitors a chance to discover how this once noisy industrial landscape became a tranquil green space. More than 7,000 trees and plants have helped create a thriving new habitat, with more than 130 species recorded in the park, including swamp wallabies, echidnas and 67 species of birds.
Whether it’s a morning bike ride, a family picnic, a walk through the trails, a history lesson, or simply an afternoon enjoying the views, Hornsby Park offers a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of Sydney.
