Museum of Contemporary Art

Mel takes a culture trip to the city and spends a day at the MCA – Australia’s only public museum dedicated to contemporary art!

The Museum of Contemporary Art is located right in Circular Quay and it’s totally free to get in. Plus, all public access areas of the MCA are wheelchair-accessible. Inside you’ll find the only public art collection in Australia entirely dedicated to the work of living artists.

Director Suzanne Cotter says that since contemporary art takes all forms, you will see painting, sculpture, performance, installations, soundscape, printmaking and much, much more.

Over a third of the collection is made up by the work of First Nations artists and in the Artists in Focus section of the gallery you can find collections of work from artists including Tracey Moffatt, Kevin Gilbert and Alick Tipoti. Also currently showing is Primavera, a showcase of young artists that is run annually at the MCA.

Not all the artwork is in the gallery. The MCA Café is taking culinary art to a new level. Executive chef, Kevin Higginson, is turning out all the favourites like burgers and fish and chips, as well as some spectacular dishes where vegetables take centre stage.

It’s a feast for the eyes, the soul and the stomach – all at the MCA.
